POINT-TO-POINT: Teenager's first career win
SIXTEEN year old Bridget Andrews opened her account as a Point-to-Point rider, achieving the first win of her career at the Cambridge with Enfield Chace meeting at Horseheath.
Riding for Great Bentley farmer, David Gibbon on Inishturk in the PPORA Members race, the teenager steered the 9/1 shot to a one length victory over 6/4 favourite Jewel Song.
This was only her second ever ride having achieved a third earlier that day on Good Vintage for her father, trainer Simon Andrews in the fist race of the day the Members.
The Restricted contest saw the closest finish of the day. with former National champion Richard Burton on Fresh Fruit just getting up to beat the Oliver Murphy ridden Premier Buck by a neck.
There were a further four wins for East Anglians. Clare Hobson, on her mothers Irish Rebel just managed to fight off Amy Stennett on Find Me Another in the Members. Clare in her first season as trainer hales from Rede, near Royston, and has had nearly all her seven victories at Horseheath.
Kelly Smith from Timworth, near Bury St. Edmunds opened her account for the season , on Mid Div And Creep in the Ladies. The horse's fifth consecutive course victory for North Weald owner, trainer Derek Harding-Jones. Second was Louse Allan on Jo Turners King Du Berlais.
In the Younger Maiden, only two horses took part Castledockrell ridden by Andrew Pennock from Boyton Hall, near Hadleigh managed to fight off James Owen on Katopast by a half a length, in a slow but nonetheless exciting race as they stayed together all the way until the finish.
The older Maiden went to the front running ex Ginger McCain Whistle Blowing trained nearby at Horseheath by Matt Smith who has only had the horse in his yard for nine weeks. The horse is owned by Robert Fuller who also lives close to the course at Haverhill.
Gerald Bailey trained Denvale was the impressive winner of the Mens Open under, owner Richard Hunnisett, in spite of his reservations about the ground which caused some horses not to run during the day due to the frost in the ground.
On Saturday the Cambridge University Draghounds will stage a meeting at Cottenham. First race Noon.
