POINT-TO-POINT FEATURE: Goscar is rocking after dominant display

FOG severely restricted the viewing in the last four races of the day on Saturday, nonetheless racegoers saw some exciting racing and some impressive horses who may well later be seen hunter chasing, or even partaking in the Foxhunter at Cheltenham.

Goscar Rock, who won the Restricted, is one of those who may go on as he made nearly all and dominated his opponents under Philip York making the three hour drive from Berkeley, Gloucestershire, well worthwhile.

Another Gloucester raider took the Intermediate in one of the fastest times of the day, Mic Aubin ridden and owned by Peter Mason, fighting it out from the cattleyard to finish two lengths ahead of Richard Burton on Maire De Beaulieu, after the favourite Lotta Presents fell at the first fence.

Burton went one better on the most impressive winner of the day, Mad Jack Duncan, in the first division of the older maiden for trainer Alan Hill from Berkshire.

At this time the fog had come down and visibility was very poor, but as they appeared out of the gloom the ex Alan King trained gelding had 20 lengths in hand at the line over runner-up Castleconner Lad.

The second division saw one of the few local wins.

Foulston Ruler, trained by Ipswich trainer George Cooper, and partnered by Alex Vaughan-Jones, beating the favourite Jonlahy with 17-year-old Jack Quinlan in the plate.

Both Opens went to raiders. The Men's was full of incident.

All Things Equal made all the running to start with, while favourite Bantry Bere and Merry Vic were close on his heel.

At the cattleyard Bantry Bere fell, closely followed at the fifth last by All Things Equal, leaving Merry Vic in the lead.

He was followed home by Northall Lad. Merry Vic has been off the course for a year and this was his first run this season for the Gorman family, trainer Carolyn and husband Marcus who rode the horse.

The Ladies Open had its moments. Monmouth raider Olival just got the better of the favourite Skyhawk, after Big Moment fell, close to the lead, bringing down Gina Andrews on Scotland Yard.

Bishop Stortford trainer Lauren Michelli had her first success from her new yard with boyfriend Andrew Braithwaite aboard Duke of Stradone in the Members. A real family affair as he was riding for his father John.

Sirius Storm took off at break-neck speed under Bradfield St George's Alex Embericos, and she and Braithwaite battled it out to the line where there was only a neck between them.

The younger Maidens were split, the first division going to Pocket Park giving jockey Philip York the second leg of a 29/1 double, after his success on Goscar Rock earlier in the day, the second was won by five-year-old Canticle from Antonia Bealby's stable in Lincolnshire.

Saturday's meeting is at Marks Tey. First race noon.
