Pat makes it five in a row

BOXER Pat McAleese made it five wins in a row with a crowd-pleasing points win over Lester Walsh at Bethnal Green on Sunday.

McAleese dominated the light-middleweight contest to take referee Jeff Hinds' verdict by 40-36, suggesting he won all four rounds.

The Newmarket man went straight on the attack from the opening bell, forcing his opponent back against the ropes. But Walsh stayed cool and hit back whenever he could.

McAleese was landing solidly, with hooks and uppercuts from either hand. Although Walsh was thrown down in the second, McAleese never looked like scoring a genuine knockdown or stopping his man.

The third saw Walsh take a barrage to the body as McAleese had him backed up against the ropes yet again, and in the last a right uppercut jerked Walsh's head back.

It was a solid showing from McAleese and the crowd at York Hall, including an enthusiastic Newmarket contingent, certainly approved.

There was an unhappy pro baptism for another Newmarket man – super-middleweight Matt Jack, who was outpointed by Reading's Patrick Mendys in another four rounds. Referee Hinds turned in a 40-36 scoreline.

Jack – a former marine who served in Afghanistan and Iraq – had the satisfaction of opening a cut above Mendys' left eye in the first, and the wound troubled him throughout.

Mendys bulldozed his way forward, always looking to work in close and although Jack fought back he couldn't match his workrate.

Jack's face was reddening by the end of the first and, although he came out strongly for the second, Mendys fired straight back at him. Mendys survived an eye inspection in the third and staggered Jack with a left hook.

Both slammed away in a good-value final round and Jacks, who acknowledged he left it late to turn pro at 27, certainly was not disgraced.

Newmarket Astley Club fighter Pender Smith took to the ring against Aylsham boxer Scott Moises on Saturday in a 69kg and under Senior ABA Eastern Counties semi-final at Tottenham and Enfield.

The 20 year old won on a unanimous decision and will now fight James Powell from Clacton in the final at Debenham tomorrow night at 8.30pm.
