Pat cruises to third pro victory
NEWMARKET light-middleweight Pat McAleese made it three professional wins in a row by easily outpointing Chingford's experienced Duncan Cottier at York Hall, Bethnal Green, on Saturday, writes Simon Euan-Smith.
Roared on as ever by a solid cheering-section, McAleese stayed cool against a tricky opponent who rarely wins but knows how to look after himself.
The Newmarket man stayed composed, kept his concentration, and produced the effective work to take referee Bob Williams' verdict by an emphatic 40-36, suggesting he won all four rounds.
McAleese started aggressively, looking to take the fight to his elusive opponent. Cottier couldn't avoid everything, and McAleese landed one solid right to the head in the first that his rival definitely felt.
McAleese kept up the pressure and Cottier used the experience of more than 50 pro outings to mess him about when he got close.
But the positive work always came from McAleese and Cottier seemed more concerned with doing the rounds and not getting hurt than actually scoring.
Cottier taught the youngster a few tricks – such as grabbing him in a headlock in the third when he got close, and then walking off.
When McAleese launched an attack in the final round, Cottier initially danced away but then decided to stand his ground, and the pair produced the best exchange of the bout.
There were broad smiles from both at the final bell and they embraced before referee Williams raised McAleese's hand.
The Eastenders know their boxing and McAleese is getting well-known at the famous York Hall where all three of his pro outings have taken place under the Left Jab promotional banner.
His bouts are always entertaining, and he always brings a good contingent of supporters.
That is a combination that makes any promoter happy and guarantees plenty of work. It's early days, but McAleese has done all that's been asked of him so far.
