Pair ready for tough test

HARRY Fowler and Angela Joiner-Handy are set to face their toughest tasks to date when they compete in this year's World Duathlon Championships on Sunday.

The Newmarket Cycling and Triathlon Club members will bid to conquer the world in their respective age groups over the 10k run, 41.6k cycle ride and 5k run at the event in Edinburgh.

Tattersalls employee Fowler will be flying the flag for Ireland in the 35-39 year age group, while Beck Row Primary School teaching assistant Joiner-Handy will represent England in the 40-44 category.

After qualifying for the championships from this year's Cambridge Duathlon back in May with a time of 2hrs 3mins, Fowler has been putting in the work to put him in top for a tilt at the weekend's race.

"I am really looking forward to it as it will be my first world championship," said Fowler.

"The course looks very gruelling as there are a lot of hill climbs involved during the cycle ride.

"But I have been training for this by taking part in several cycle events in France.

"I am going for the experience so I have not set myself any real targets just to try and be one of the top Irish competitors home," he added.

For 41-year-old Joiner-Handy from Mulberry Close, Mildenhall, qualification was not completed close to home after booking her place in the final following a time of 2hs 21 mins obtained during a qualifying event in Worksop back in March.

"I have no idea how I will get on as it is the world championships so anything could happen. The course is pretty demanding and technical. I will just go their and do my best.

"I have been in good form this season and have been pleased with my results so we will see what happens on the day."

Joining the duo across the border will be Reach based athlete Juliet Vickery who will compete in the 44-49 age group.

Unlike both Fowler and Joiner-Handy, this year's event will be the 47 year-old's second World Duathlon Championship after taking part in the competition six years ago in Belgium where she was denied gold in her age category by just four seconds.
