Mini break will boost Jockeys

NEWMARKET Town boss Kevin Grainger believes the cancellation of Saturday’s basement clash with Great Yarmouth Town has worked in the club’s favour.

As a result of the freezing conditions experienced across the eastern region, the Jockeys’ match against the Bloaters was one of nine Ridgeons Premier to fall foul of the weather.

“I am not to disappointed as with the injuries we have the squad is not at its biggest, so it has worked in our favour,” said Grainger.

“With last Saturday’s match called off and us not having one this weekend it gives us a mini break before taking on Wivenhoe Town, which is a massive clash. Given our situation, the mini-break may just be what the players need,” he added.

Unlike Grainger, Ely City boss Alan Alsop was not so pleased about his side’s clash with Wroxham being postponed, despite the fact goalkeeper Lee Pacey will now be available to play in the rearranged fixture.

“We wanted to play the match as all the players were ready for it,” said Alsop. “The only positive side is that Lee’s suspension will have been served by the time the fixture is played.

“We are supposed to be away at Hadleigh United this weekend, but unless we have a heatwave I can’t see the match being on.”

City have been dealt major setback in their title charge after learning centre-midfielder Stuart Walker is to miss the rest of the campaign after damaging knee ligaments.

The former Mildenhall Town player picked up the injury during the Robins’ 0-0 draw at Diss Town last month.

“We don’t know what extent he has damaged his ligaments as he has not had a scan yet. However the surgeon seems to think it could well be his cruciate ligament,” added Alsop.

Although both Grainger and Alsop had differing views on Saturday’s cancellations, Mildenhall Town boss Christian Appleford feels his side’s postponed clash against Gorleston was no more than a nuisance.

“We wanted to carry on our run,” said Appleford. “Sometimes breaks can work for you in getting people back from injury, but we have still got Michael Harvey suspended and Steve Holder now on holiday. However, it is no more than a pain to us really.”
