Mildenhall lose grip on trophy after shootout

CAMBS INVITATION CUP

QUARTER-FINAL

Mildenhall Town 1 Ely City 1

(Ely City won 4-3 on penalties)

THERE will be a new name etched on the Cambs Invitation Cup after Mildenhall Town suffered penalty shootout heartbreak.

Having put themselves in the driving seat with Josh Pope beating away City’s first penalty from Luke Parkinson, misses from Wayne Proctor, David Cooper and Dave Werthmann sealed Town’s exit from the competition they have won for the past two seasons.

After an opening half hour lacking any real chances, the Recreation Way outfit took the lead with the game’s first real clear-cut opening through Wayne Proctor.

Picking up a flicked on ball from midfield, the centre forward showed a clean pair of heels to his marker before unleashing clinical finish past City’s stand-in shot stopper Jamie Greygoose.

Proctor could have doubled Hall’s lead minutes into the second half, but Greygoose proved equal to his well-struck drive from a tight angle to beat the ball away at the near post.

It took a smart save from Pope to keep the scores level as City looked for a leveller, the Town custodian palming away Sam Parkinson’s well-struck free-kick.

Things looked to be heading Town’s way, that was until 15 minutes from time where some less than inspiring defending allowed City back into the match.

Pope’s poor punch from a corner found its way to City captain Ben Lawrence, who made no mistake in finding the back of the net.

Town almost instantly retook the lead, once again Greygoose proving equal to the hosts’ threat beating away Cooper’s drive from the right-hand side of the box.

Josh Turner could then only look on as his low shot found its way past Greygoose only for it to rebound off the inside of the post before being hacked away to safety.

At the other end, Austen Diaper failed to bring his shooting boots when firing inches over the Town bar after being put in the clear.

As the game moved into a penalty shootout the pressure was immediately placed on City with Luke Parkinson seeing his spot-kick saved.

But with Proctor missing his spot-kick, and City scoring their next the teams were back on level terms.

Taz Chisango then had the chance to win the tie for City after Cooper saw his tame penalty saved, but the substitute striker could only drag his spot-kick wide.

Werthmann then saw his spot-kick saved as the game moved into sudden death before Nick Impey kept his cool to slot home and send Ely into the semi-finals of the competition.
