Mildenhall snatch victory after golden goal drama

ATTEMPT ON GOAL: Mildenhall College of Technology pupil Joe Webb fires a shot past Newmarket College goalkeeper Jack Harding.

Teams from colleges in Newmarket and Mildenhall took to the pitch earlier this month to battle it out to become the Forest Heath School Sports Partnership Under-13 In2Hockey champion.

The event was originally scheduled to take place in December, but was rearranged due the inclement weather.

However, the frozen pitch which caused the original postponement would have arguably been preferable to the gale force winds and lashing rain that besieged the tournament this time around.

The boys’ competition between Mildenhall College of Technology and Newmarket College did not disappoint with the match going right down to the wire.

With the scores locked at 1-1 at the end of full-time the golden goal rule was implemented. It did not take long for matters to be settled, with Mildenhall scoring the winner within a minute of extra-time.

While the boys’ competition was a closely-fought battle, the girls’ event was effectively a training session for the Newmarket College side after their two opponents withdrew on the day.

Both the boys’ team from Mildenhall College of Technology and the Newmarket College girls’ team will now go on to represent Forest Heath at the county final, which will take place in Ipswich on Thursday, March 21.
