Mazey's brace secured cup final place
A COMFORTABLE 4-2 victory over Hundon Reserves took Lakenheath Reserves into the final of the John Ablett Cup where they will meet another local side – Burwell Swifts.
It was the visitors to The Pit who nearly opened the scoring with a stinging shot which cannoned back off the post before being hacked away to safety.
The home side finally made the breakthrough when Mark Tuffs calmly lobbed the advancing keeper to put Lakenheath 1-0 up. A second goal soon followed, this time coming from winger Andrew Mazey.
The visitors were handed a lifeline when the referee failed to spot an apparent handball and Hundon took full advantage by grabbing a goal from it.
With the visitors now in the ascendancy, a crunching tackle from the Hundon centre-forward was overlooked by the referee and led to an equaliser just before the break.
As the second half got under way, the home side nearly went 3-2 up but a fantastic save from the visiting goalkeeper kept the scores level.
After being awarded a penalty midway through the second half, midfielder Matt Bellingham made no mistake in finishing from the spot to put Lakenheath 3-2 up.
There was more joy for Lakenheath as winger Mazey grabbed his second of the afternoon by rounding the keeper to make the score 4-2 in favour of the home side.
As the clock ran down, changes were made but the home side remained solid throughout the park and held on for a 4-2 victory to book a place at Histon's Glass World Stadium on May 8.
