Di’s four-some effort as Newmarket cruise to win
CAMBS WOMEN’S LEAGUE
PREMIER DIVISION
Newmarket 6 St Ives II 1
DI THOMAS was the star of the show after grabbing four goals as Newmarket ran out convincing winners against basement side St Ives.
After making a bright start, Newmarket opened the scoring from a short corner. The initial strike failed to find the back of the goal, but Thomas was in front of keeper and used her trademark reverse stick flick to put Town in front.

Using the space down the wing, Lydia Evans crossed to McDonnell, who found Thomas on the P spot and the ace marksman casually slotted the ball home.
St Ives pulled one back, but Thomas completed her hat-trick after a string of accurate passing from the team, she managed to slot the ball between the keeper’s legs.
After the break, Gail McDonnell and Jazz Wombwell were able to move up the field from defence to get involved in the action.
Jenny Richards used her calm intellect on the ball and passed to Isabel Hooley. With the ball pinging round the D ,the vital pinpoint shot came from Claire McDonnell who converted through a shot that found the bottom right-hand corner.

Next to find the net was Lucy Brown. Breaking clear from her defender, Brown met the ball perfectly to deflect into the net, before Thomas bagged her fourth and Newmarket’s sixth late on.

St Neots II 0 Newmarket 9
FINDING the back of the net proved to be an easy task for Newmarket as they slammed home nine unanswered goals against St Neots.
Jordan Newnes did a fantastic job of marshalling St Neots’ lively centre forward, restricting the home side to one effort on target that was acrobatically saved by Chris Routs in goal.
Newmarket took the lead when Mike Skelton drew his marker in before playing in Matt Holden, who finished emphatically into the roof of the net.
Skelton soon added a second, taking a good first touch and firing the ball into the far corner on his reverse.
Will Wilson rattled the bar from Mark Pears’ pull-back before Simon Harrington, promoted up for short corner duties, found Wilson, who drove the line and set Josh Dawson up for a tap-in.
Early in the second half, Pears added a fourth. Skelton held the ball up and put Pears through to beat a defender and guide the ball into the far corner.
Ollie Wade turned provider for the next two goals. The first of which he squared the ball to Leggett, who took a touch into the D and blasted it into the bottom right corner.
For the sixth, Wade ran down the left wing, beat the right-back before picking out Holden, whose first effort hit a foot on the line.
The ball bounced back to him, the umpire played advantage and he scored at the second attempt.
Dave Worrall netted the seventh, his first goal since 2003, collecting Wilson’s pass he beat two men before finishing above the onrushing keeper into the roof of the net.
Alex Andreou added the eighth, beating a couple of men. His effort was on target but took a cruel deflection off a defender’s foot past the St Neots keeper, before Wilson added a ninth to wrap up the emphatic victory.
