CYCLING: Trott powers her way to title
LAURA Trott powered her way to victory in the feature event at this year's Mildenhall Cycling Rally over the weekend.
The Welwyn Wheelers rider took home the gold in the Women's National 800m Grass-Track Championship on Saturday ahead of Border City Wheelers starlet Jo Smith and Mildenhall's own Sarra Boyd back in third.
Phil Lisher had weekend to remember after taking home victories in both the final points counting events of British Cycling's National Short and Endurance Leagues after capturing the 800m scratch race and 8k mini-milk race.
Max Pendleton, father of gold medal winning Olympic cyclist Victoria Pendleton, showed he is a more than capable performer on two wheels after taking third in adult roller-racing event.
Comprising of a 500m time-trial, 750 metre scratch race and 500m handicap the Mildenhall Cycling Club member, finished third behind Sportcity cyclist Matt Rotherham.
There was more success on the home front in the junior section after Colin Mantle came away with a podium finish in the 6-7 year old duathlon on Sunday when finishing a close second behind Border City Wheelers Matthew Egglestone.
Mark Burchett, co-organiser, said: "The rally bucked the trend compared to others as we had more than 130 riders competing over the three days.
What was even more pleasing was that on Saturday we had 64 riders aged under 16 which bodes very well for the future of the sport."
"Without the huge amount of time given up by those club-members present and the volunteers, swelling the numbers helping in the running of all the events the rally could just not take place for which we are very grateful."
