* ON FRIDAY, the Reveloutdoors mountainbike race team continued their summer race campaign and were in action in the third round of the Friday Night Summer Series at Daventry.
The conditions were perfect after a week of dry weather which made the course very fast.
The course had changed from last year to include fewer grass sections and more single-track and fast open fire road sections which suited the team. The race format was a short course with multiple laps.
Jamie Wightman, James Dyke and Neil Payne were all in the 18-39 age category while Garry Houghton rode in the 40+ category.
Arriving in plenty time, the riders were able to warm-up well which is critical with this format of racing.
The start saw 60 riders in each class.
In the mass start, Wightman got away well near the front of the field settling into a high position in the highly competitive field.
He was strong throughout the evenly paced five-lap race eventually finishing sixth only five minutes behind the winner.
Dyke was chasing hard with Wightman still in his sights at the end of the first lap.
Dyke tried to keep up this pace but found it was too much as the race progressed and after a minor fall in the tight single-track section, Wightman pulled away.
Dyke eventually finished in tenth place 3mins 40secs behind Wightman.
Houghton had a good first lap only 30 seconds slower than Dyke but, during the second, the hectic last few weeks started to tell and fatigue started to have its effect.
With Houghton struggling to keep momentum he fell back through the field.
He managed to keep going but was passed by Payne who was much further down the field after a poor start.
Payne was now getting used to the course and using his power on the open sections and, spurred on by the sight of Houghton upfront, pushed hard.
However, he nearly came unstuck when he had a minor collision with a tree while chasing hard, making up places as the race continued to eventually finish in 21st place, 30 seconds ahead of the struggling Houghton who ended up a disappointing 18th and one lap down on the leaders in the 40+ class.
Results: over-40s Houghton 18th four laps in 51.34; under-40s Jamie Wightman sixth five laps in 56.26, James Dyke five laps in 1.00.41; Neil Payne 21st four laps in 51.01.
