Cricket: So close to maximum

TUCKER GARDNER PREMIER LEAGUE Division Two, Fordham 212-6 Eaton Socon 136-9: FORDHAM failed by just one wicket to claim a maximum 30 point winning haul as they came out on top in terms of points and the contest itself in a drawn match.

Fordham elected to bat first but the visiting bowlers bowled extremely well early on and the home side struggled to barely two runs per over from the first 15 bowled with both openers already in the pavilion.

But Mark Abbott entered the fray and went on to play a glorious innings of 94 as the run rate increased dramatically.

Abbott shared in partnerships of 58 with Darren Theobald who made 29 and 69 with Gnik who was still there at the end on 30 not out.

Graham Arnold weighed in with 19 not out and Matt Foulds' solid cameo of 18 earlier on stabilised a somewhat precarious situation.

These contributions enabled Fordham to reach 212-6 from their allotted 48 overs.

Eaton Socon made a steady start but Clinton Cornwell claimed the first two wickets and Jason Harding's first delivery brought the third wicket as the visitors slumped to 44-3.

With two wickets going down in the fifties, the visitors were in deep trouble but their lower order began to bat defensively in an attempt to salvage a draw.

Charles Forden came back into the attack to claim the ninth wicket with just three balls remaining but that vital final strike eluded the home side. Fordham gained 16 points to Socon's four.

Fordham have a very busy schedule over the next few days.

They meet Weston Colville in the semi-final of the Gibson Cup at Exning Park this evening (Thursday) and travel to Churchill College, Cambridge, on Saturday to face NCI in a Tucker Premier match.

Then on Sunday they travel to Kent to meet twice winners of the competition, Linton Park, in the National Village Championship.

Anyone wishing to travel on the coach which leaves Fordham at 9am should call 07789 825924 to book their seat.

Wimblington also scored at six an over early on but gradually Fordham got among the wickets. The hosts lost half their side before they reached the three figure mark with Craig Theobald (3-32) and Ryan Houghton (3-36) doing the damage.
