Chance to show off skills
WANNABE boxers from across the Newmarket area will be given the chance to show off their skills in the ring at a white collar boxing event.
Organised by Newmarket-based professional boxer Pat McAleese, the event is to feature around 15 bouts and scheduled to take place at bloodstock auctioneers Tattersalls in April.
“These type of shows are becoming more popular across the country,” said McAleese.
“Setting the show up has been on my mind for a while as a lot of people have enquired about the possibility of doing one.”
Aimed at those who cannot commit to the amateur boxing ranks on a full-time basis, each contest is fought over three two-minute rounds, with competitors wearing fully protective headgear.
On Monday, fighters took their first steps towards the big night following the start of an eight week training programme, created and run by McAleese, to ensure they are fully prepared for the show.
“The plan is to get each of them training with me three times a week,” added McAleese.
“During the course of the eight weeks they will be working on everything from improving general fitness through circuit training, to working on the pads and doing sparring.
“The standard of boxing may not necessarily be the greatest, but it promises to be an entertaining spectacle for the audience.
“Although we have started with the training programme, I am still keen to hear from any other boxer who feels they want to be part of this event.”
Following on from action in the ring will be a charity auction and raffle.
Money raised from both the raffle and auction will be handed over to racing charity Racing Welfare.
