Carpincho’s credentials will be put to the test
Newmarket Journal - October 2011 NEWMARKET JOURNAL PICTURES OF SARAH HUMPHREY AT HER YARD IN WEST WRATTING. CARPINCHO.
PROMISING novice chaser Carpincho is to have his credentials thoroughly tested on Saturday when taking on a high-class field at Cheltenham.
Already a winner of two of his four starts over fences this season, the Sarah Humphrey-trained eight year old will bid for win number three of the campaign in the Class Two Timeform Novices’ Chase at Prestbury Park.
It is hoped by the West Wratting trainer that the race will act as a prep run for a shot at the Cheltenham Festival in March.
“Carpincho is still in great form at home and the ground at Cheltenham on Saturday should be perfect for him,” said Humphrey.
“The race will give him a spin around Cheltenham before he returns there for the Festival in March.
“He is racing off quite a nice weight on Saturday and we are very excited about his chances.”
Last time out, the son of Jimble put in an exemplary round of jumping when making all under Aidan Coleman to score by 15 lengths in a Class Four novice chase at Fontwell.
“Small field races can be quite tricky so I told Aidan to make the running aboard him as he has such a high cruising speed,” she added.
“Aidan got him into a nice rhythm and he jumped well throughout the race,
“With him not quite having that turn of foot at the end of a race and with Saturday’s contest being over two miles five furlongs I would be inclined to let him bowl along in front again as he will have no problem galloping on up the hill.”
Twenty four hours before Carpincho takes to the track at Cheltenham, stablemate Court Red Handed will bid to put behind him a disappointing run last time out when appearing at Huntingdon.
After finishing third in the Class Two Maxilead Tommy Whittle Handicap Chase at Haydock in December, the seven year old was less than inspiring when finishing sixth out of seven runners in the Class Two Betfred 1350 Shops Nationwide Novices’ Chase at Warwick.
“Court Red Handed is a bit of a quirky character and he did not quite put his all in last time,” said Humphrey.
“We plan to run in him in blinkers just to try and keep him interested and hopefully bring about his spark again.”
Court Red Handed could be joined at the Cambridgeshire track by Dorset Square who has been given an entry in the Class Two Pertemps Handicap Hurdle (Series Qualifier).
The former Willie Mullins star disappointed on his first run for Humphrey earlier this month when trailing home 15th in another Pertemps series qualifier at Warwick.
“I have no idea why Dorset Square under performed as there was nothing physically wrong with him,” added Humphrey.
“At the minute I am 50/50 if he runs at Huntingdon on Friday. I am not convinced he wants the ground really soft. We will have to see how much rain we get before making a decision.”
