Brett bows out after early exit

CITY of Ely bowls star Nicky Brett has seen his attempts of lifting this year’s Co-operative Funeralcare Welsh Grand Prix cut short following a second round exit from the competition.

After reaching the quarter-finals of this year’s Fred Olsen Cruiselines World Championships at the end of last month, the Cambridgeshire bowler failed to put in a repeat performance after going down to a two sets to one defeat to David Gourlay.

Having seen off Australian Ben Swift in straight sets, 12-1, 10-6, during the opening day of play on Saturday, the provisional world number 16 suffered an agonising tie-break defeat at the hands of Scottish opponent.

Losing the first set 9-3, Brett fought back gamely to clinch the second 8-6 to force the match into a tie-break scenario.

But it was Gourlay who was to hold his nerve and move into the quarter-finals, registering a 2-1 victory in the decider.

Fellow City of Ely bowler and former world indoor bowls champion Greg Harlow nearly suffered a shock first round defeat at the hands of newly-crowned Welsh champion Damien Doubler on Tuesday.

Taking the first set 9-4, Harlow, world champion in 2010, lost the second set 7-6 before prevailing 2-0 in the tie-break.

As a result of his victory, Harlow set up a clash with Canadian qualifier Peter Ls Wong. The match was scheduled for yesterday afternoon.
