Brett bags Harlow scalp
NICKY Brett upset the odds in the second round of the Fred Olsen Cruise Lines World Indoor Bowls Championships on Tuesday after knocking out 2010 world champion Greg Harlow.
Number 15 seed Brett stormed into the quarter-finals of this year’s competition at the Potters Leisure Resort, at Hopton-on-Sea, with a 2-1 win over his more fancied City of Ely club-mate.
After finding himself 6-5 down in the opening set, Brett finished with a flourish over the last two ends, taking five shots on the bounce to claim the set 10-6.
Harlow, runner-up in November’s Co-operative Funeralcare Scottish International Open, responded by taking the second set.
Having led 8-4 at one stage, Harlow survived a fightback from Brett before closing out the set 9-7.
Brett forged ahead in the opening end of the tie-break before Harlow levelled up matters once again.
But it was Brett who had the final say, taking the final end to claim victory by the narrowest of margins.
Brett will now face fellow England star Andy Thomson in the quarter-finals at the Norfolk resort tomorrow.
Thomson sealed his spot in the last eight after overcoming Craig Rimmington 2-0.
South African qualifier Rimmington, who shook the bowls world when defeating five-time world champion Alex Marshall in the opening round of the singles, had no answer to Thomson who ran out an 11-1, 11-3 winner.
Tuesday’s elimination from the world indoor singles for Harlow comes just days after he was shown the exit door in the quarter-finals of the Mixed Pairs World Matchplay.
Teaming up with 22-year-old debutant Amy Stanton the pair looked to be on course for the semi-finals after taking the opening set against Scotland’s David Gourlay, and England’s Debbie Stavrou, 9-7.
But it was not to be for Harlow and Stanton who lost the second set 8-6, before going down 2-0 in the tie-break.
