Boxing: New Astley celebrate their achievements

Boxers at Newmarket's New Astley Club celebrated their achievements with an end of season awards evening on Friday.

Certificates were given to youngsters who train at the club but are too young to box, as well as trophies for carded boxers.

Special awards were also presented for; Best Schoolboy, Pender Buckley, Best Youth, Mark Samuels, Best Senior Oggy Smith, Best Junior Newcomer, Richard Vinden, Best Senior Newcomer, Peter Croucher, Most Dedicated Trainer, Mark Samuels, Most Improved Boxer, Jordan Whippy.

The boxer of the year award was presented to Jordan Smith who reached the semi-finals of the junior ABA championship but missed out on the final by a point.

Named after former Astley Club boxing coach, who died in November last year, the John Humphrey Award was presented to ten-year-old Charlie Buckley.

The candidate is chosen each year by New Astley Club boxing coach Mark O'Reilly.

The ten year old is currently battling leukaemia in Addenbrooke's Hospital, Cambridge.
