BOXING: classes for women start in Newmarket

WOMEN interested in taking up boxing are to be given the chance to put their skills to the test in a series of new classes being staged at Newmarket's New Astley Boxing Club.

Organised by the club's head-coach Mark O'Reilly, the classes will look to develop boxing techniques along with improving the levels of fitness.

"With there being four divisions of women's boxing at the Olympics it seems a good opportunity to encourage women in the area to have a go at the sport," said O'Reilly.

"Hopefully with this being a women's only class it will encourage those who may be intimidated by a normal boxing gym to come have a go at the sport.

"Once they feel comfortable in these classes then it would be good if a few could move up to into our regular training sessions. The aim is to run them for September and see how popular they are.

"If they prove a success then will look at carrying them on."

Earlier this year the 42 year old had his coaching skills recognised when being presented with the Amateur Boxing Association's Advanced Coach Grade Three certificate.

The new classes, which will start on Wednesday, September 8, are open to all those above the age of 10.

Each session costs 3 for juniors and 4 for seniors.

To book a place on the first session contact Debbie at The New Astley Club on 01638 662828.
