Athletics: Goldie in fitness fight for Commonwealth Games
BRITISH record javelin holder Goldie Sayers has rated her chance of making this year's Commonwealth Games as 50-50.
On Monday, the 28 year old was selected as part of the 100-strong England athletic team to take part in the games in Delhi, India, in October.
Although being selected as one of two women javelin thrower's for the games, the Newmarket born star has revealed that a tilt at the games is still in the balance as she works her way back to full fitness from a hip injury suffered during the UK Championships, in June.
As a result of the injury, the former King's School Ely pupil was forced to miss this year's European Athletics Championships in Barcelona.
Last week however, Sayers made a vital breakthrough in her recovery after ditching her crutches for the first time since picking up the injury to take on some basic walking drills.
"It was nice to be able to do some walking drills as it is a good sign for my progression back to full fitness," said Sayers.
"I have been training quite hard in the pool, on my bike along with doing lots of work with weights and the medicine ball to help keep my fitness levels up.
"I would like to go to the Commonwealth Games, but I want to be able to be competitive. I will be making a decision about my participation within the next couple of weeks. At the minute it is 50-50 whether I go or not," said Sayers.
Last year, the Loughborough University graduate was dealt another injury blow ahead of the World Championships in Berlin when suffering a stress fracture in her lower back.
Although making the games in Germany, Sayers failed to perform anywhere near her British record best throw of 66.75m achieved in the 2008 Beijing Olympics, managing a longest throw of 59.98m.
"The time off has given me the chance to look into certain aspects that my full training would not normally allow like my throwing action and upper body work, so in one sense the injury has helped."
"If I don't make back in time for the Commonwealth Games then the aim will be to get a good winter training under my belt, before throwing again early next year."
Forced to watch the European Championships from the comfort of her living room, Sayers is confident she could have further added to Great Britain's 19 medal record breaking haul from the games.
"Obviously it was disappointing not to be competing in Barcelona but it was great watching everyone doing so well.
"I like to think I would have been in with a chance of a medal as it was quite an open contest.
"A lot of people under performed in the event and the winner Linda Stahl was a bit of a surprise," added Sayers.
