Callum Wilkinson believes he is in the right shape to challenge for medals at the upcoming Race-Walking World Cup and World Junior Championships, writes Liam Apicella.

The 18-year-old continued his positive start to the year last weekend by clinching the first international victory of his career at the IAAF Challenge staged in Slovakia.

And, with attention soon about to switch to May and July’s major events, the Moulton-based athlete has his eyes fixed firmly on the big prizes.

“Although they look close on the calendar, there is still a lot of work to be done before those events,” he said.

“It is still early and we have not really reached the competition phase of training yet.

“But, medals were always the hope at the start of the year, and the way the season has gone, it feels like they are getting closer.”

Wilkinson’s most recent triumph came over 10km in a time of 41 minutes and 36 seconds, which was more than a minute quicker than his nearest competitor.
