Mark Wallis believes Swift Whirlwind is a ‘lively outsider’ for the William Hill All England Cup final in Newcastle tonight (9.08pm).

The Lakenheath handler is aiming for a first ever All England Cup victory this evening, and with it take home the £10,000 winner’s prize.

And despite his runner Swift Whirlwind propping up the betting among the six entrants, Wallis is hopeful his 16/1 outsider can spring a surprise or two tonight.

“He’s a lively outsider I would say,” the six-time trainer of the year said.

“He did well to get through the first round, but produced his best form for a while when he was beaten fair and square by Maum Legend in the semi-finals.

“He was beaten by four-and-a-half lengths although he never looked in danger of not qualifying for the final.

“He’s got a bit to find on the clock in the final, but who knows? If he can trap in his best style and there is any crowding on the inside his price of 16/1 could be made to look huge.”

Maum Legend is the 5/4 favourite in the final, which is being screened live on Sky Sports, with trainer Jimmy Wright hoping he can go better than last year’s third place finish behind the inspired Newinn Yolo.

Ted Soppitt’s Calzaghe George is close behind in the betting at 11/4, while Astra Prince (5/1), Farloe Nutter (9/2) and Holdem Chico (12/1) complete the line-up.

Wallis also has runners in the Great North Run, Angel of the North Oaks and Marathon support races, and will be hoping to claim more success to what he describes as a ‘fabulous year’ on the track.

The in-form Ribble Atom has won both of her outings this month and has been placed in trap one for the £500 Marathon (7.43pm).

Domino Storm won by two-and-a-half lengths in the heats of the Angel Of The North Oaks at the weekend and will be in trap two for the final later this evening (8.16pm).

Jimmy Nailed On completes the quartet of runners for Wallis tonight and will fancy his chances in the Great North Run final (8.33pm).

After winning his heat by three-and-a-half lengths on Saturday, Jimmy Nailed On starts the £3,000 race in trap five and as a 6/1 outsider, with Elwick Glory (13/8), Shellam Maeby (7/2) and Calzaghe Lisa (9/2) all ahead in the betting.
