TJ Turner missed out on being crowned a national champion after suffering a defeat in Rotherham at the weekend.
The New Astley fighter faced off against Middlesbrough’s Balal Hussain in the 46-48kg final of the England Boxing Junior Development Championship.
But despite more than matching his opponent over the first two rounds, Turner struggled in the decisive final round as Hussain took control of the bout to secure a unanimous decision from the judges and clinch the title.
“All rounds were pretty close apart from the final round unfortunately,” said Astley head coach Mark O’Reilly.
“TJ tried his best but at the end of the day the other lad just appeared to want it more in the final round and got the decision.
“He tried his best and that is all we can ask for.”
Meanwhile, club mate Lee Morfey was also due in action in the England Boxing Senior Development Championship, but received a bye.
