Soham’s bright start against title holders Ely I (formerly Haddenham I) soon turned into disappointment during their Division One clash in the Ely and District Table Tennis League.
Clive Woollard stole a win against Liam Mohan before retaining his momentum to defeat Kieran Mohan. He then came unstuck against Patrick Mohan who was determined to restore the family pride.
Valiant efforts from Ian Boggie and Tony Everitt were not enough to stop Patrick who went on to win his three games for Ely. Everitt added a further point for Soham with a victory over Liam, who then recovered to overpower Boggie. Despite being put under pressure from both Boggie and Everitt, Kieran maintained his composure to add two more wins for Ely.
In the doubles, Everitt and Woollard could do little to halt Kieran and Patrick, with Patrick creating numerous chances for Kieran to hit the winning shots, which he did with ease and push Ely to a 7-3 victory.
Fulbourn I were in fine form against Stetchworth Ellesmere Centre I when winning 9-1. Nigel Bates, Peter Xie and Jannek Hauser encountered an off-colour Rhys Davies. Only Joanne Pettitt troubled the scorecard as she overcame Xie to avoid the whitewash.
In Division Two Impington II entertained top-of-the-table Soham Comrades II and found themselves at the wrong end of a drubbing as the experience, fleet of foot and expertise of the visitors inflicted the dreaded whitewash.
Try as hard as they could with the vastly superior shots from their opponents forcing some remarkable and impressive responses – Tony Taylor, Duncan Taylor and Mike Johnston found Robin Wallis, Bela Szabo and Kin Choi Chan just too good.
Only the first game of the evening, when Tony Taylor lost 9-11 in the fifth to Wallis, and Tony’s other two matches, went beyond three legs for the hosts.
