Two former players from Newmarket Rugby Club’s girls’ section have been awarded rugby scholarships to run alongside their A-level studies.
Forward Freya Burt, 16, and scrum-half Anna Goddard, 16, have been offered at places on the Girls Rugby Achieving Academic and Sporting Excellence (AASE) programme at Brockenhurst College and Hartpury College respectively.
There are only eight colleges in the country that offer the scholarship and only 10 places at each college are available.
Both Burt and Goddard have played rugby since they were young, with the pair coming up through the minis and girls’ section at Newmarket Rugby Club.
They have also played for Eastern Counties Under-15 Girls and currently play for the under-18 girls’ team.
The pair will both undertake a daily programme to include strength and conditioning sessions, positional skills, match play, team practice and one-to-one analysis.
They will attend RFU development days, where all players from eight colleges come together at a central venue for coaching by RFU and England coaches and play in the AASE college league for their respective colleges.
