Mark Wallis is confident Reel Shirty can cause an upset again when he races in the semi-finals of the Sussex Cup.
The category one competition got underway in Hove last Thursday, with Reel Shirty finishing third in heat four to qualify for tonight’s semi-finals.
The Lakenheath handler’s other runner, Calco Flyer, was eliminated from the competition after only managing fifth in heat five.
“Calco Flyer was a bit unlucky, he got into the first bend in a good position but the dog on track one took him out,” Wallis said. “Reel Shirty was the biggest surprise for us.
“He was the outsider of the team but qualified for the semi-finals and I think he could surprise a few people.
“He’ll be the outsider again but he has got a good draw in trap six of his heat.”
Reel Shirty is set to run in the second of three semi-final heats this evening (8.34pm), with the top two finishers from each heat qualifying for the final next Thursday.
n Elsewhere, Domino Storm finished in an impressive third place in the Betfred Select Stakes in Nottingham on Tuesday.
Wallis’ runner in the invitational race, which was shown live on Sky Sports, made a fine start into second place, before slipping behind Eden The Kid on the final stretch of the 500m circuit.
Swift Hoffman, the 4/5 favourite before the race, ran out a comfortable winner by nearly five lengths with a time of 29.20 seconds, with Storm (29.62) coming in at third.
