Record entries for Newmarket 10k

A record number of entries look set to line up in Sunday’s Powters Newmarket 10k, writes Graham Clark.

Entries for this year’s race, which will start and finish in Stetchworth, have already surpassed the current record of 200.

With this year’s race proving to be extremely popular, organisers from host club the Newmarket Joggers expect the final number to be somewhere close to the 300-runner safety limit.

“We are delighted with the support we have had for this year’s race,” said Carolynn Anderson, chairman of the Newmarket Joggers. “A lot of hard work goes into organising the event as there are a lot of things to sort out, so seeing these sort of numbers make it worthwhile. With the way it is going we could end up near the 300-mark.”

With such a big field set to take part in this year’s race Anderson feels the track record of 32 minutes 39 second set by Saint Edmund Pacer Steven Robinson 12 months ago could be lowered for the third year running.

“The record is there for the taking and with such a big field set to line up it would not surprise me in the slightest if it was broken again,” said Anderson.

“It is a course that runners seem to want to come back and have a go year after year as it challenges them.”

Entry for the race is open online until midday tomorrow.Runners are reminded that they must be registered for the race by 9.30am on Sunday.

A children’s fun run will take place before the main event at 9.30am with entries taken on the day.
