Opening day to forget for Comrades

Soham Comrades fell to a crushing 9-1 defeat in their opening Ely and District League Division One match against Impington .

The Comrades’ one victory was achieved with a five-set win by James Nicholls over Bob Pettit.

Stetchworth’s Ellesmere Centre’s first encounter in Division One resulted in a 7-3 win for their visitors Fulbourn.

Joanne Pettitt beat Peter Zivtins in three, Rob Boyce came back from two down to beat Marc Meunier in five and Pettitt and Rhys Davies took a five-set doubles against Meunier and Zivtins.

Soham came away from Elsworth with a 6-4 victory, Martin Freeland gained a singles maximum and then won the doubles with Tony Everitt against Roger Fensom and Peter Goatly.

In Division Two Soham Comrades II’s Rob Wallis and Bela Szabo won two singles matches each and then the doubles against Philip Hague and Tom Lodziak in a 6-4 victory over Fulbourn III. Kin Choi Chan beat Sammy Hague to complete the tally.

Ely IV celebrated their promotion to Division Two with a strong home performance against Soham Comrades IV.

Rob Pownall scored a singles maximum along with taking the doubles with Greg Ozog. Singles wins also came from Karen Byford and Ozog.

Two-man Fulbourn IV went down 8-2 against Ely III in a match which saw Neil Abram and Margaret Chambers unbeaten.

A strong Comrades III team of Tony Comiskey, Alan Chambers and Mark Coles visited Impington II and came away with a 9-1 victory. But Elsworth left Soham Comrades VI with a 10-0 victory.

In Division Three Carl Woolf was in fine form for Fulbourn VII when they beat Stetchworth Ellesmere Centre II by 6-4, achieving a maximum in his singles before taking the doubles with Robert Powell.

Elsewhere in the division Ely V outpointed Haddenham and Countess and Stetchworth Ellesmere Centre IIIs shared the spoils while Soham Comrades V demolished Fulbourn VI 10-0.
