EAST MEN’S LEAGUE DIVISION THREE NORTH EAST: Ipswich and East Suffolk 2 Newmarket 4: Newmarket put in another top performance to pick up another three points, this time on Ipswich’s new pitch.

The team started brightly and their disappointing short corner conversion rate this season was changed at the first attempt when Will Wilson smashed the back board before the IES keeper had hit the ground.

Against the run of play the hosts pulled level, but Newmarket continued to play their game, and the persistence paid off when Harry Bell converted another short corner with a mean flick.

They kept up the momentum to score a third with Mike Skelton directing Holden’s cross into the far corner.

Newmarket continued to move the ball well and Bell got his second when another flick from a short corner evaded the IES keeper for a 4-1 lead at half-time.

The home side were able to pull one back with a swift counter-attack in the second half, but the damage had already been done as Newmarket strolled to victory.

n Newmarket Ladies suffered another heavy defeat in East Women’s League Division Two North, this time 6-0 at home to Norwich City, who were relegated last season.

They had conceded five of the goals by half-time but put in a much-improved performance after the break with superb work from player-of-the-match Denise Wagner, to give them hope that they can compete with the top sides in the league.

n Rachel Pegg starred in Newmarket III’s 1-0 defeat against City of Peterborough in
Division Four North East (South).

They played a well-fought game and had many chances to score but sadly never found the back of the net, with the only goal going the way of their opponents in the first half.
