Newmarket Rugby Club failed to cause an upset as they slipped to a 40-5 defeat to Greene King IPA Eastern Counties League Division One leaders Wymondham.

An under-strength Newmarket proved no match for their visitors as they suffered a third straight defeat ahead of a trip to fellow stugglers Swaffham on Saturday (2pm).

“We just managed to scrape together a squad which is massively disappointing,” said manager Raymond Richardson. “The players gave everything they had but Wymondham are a very good side.

“Saturday’s game is a big one, we need to pull Swaffham towards the bottom.”
