Javelin star Goldie Sayers has been handed a major sponsor boost but on the condition she mentors another athlete in their quest for Olympic gold.
The agreement will see the Newmarket-based thrower sponsored by sporting philanthropist Barrie Wells on the condition that she in turn mentors the world’s leading heptathlete Katarina Johnson-Thompson.
Reflecting on the collaboration, Sayers is delighted to try and help a fellow athlete fulfil her medal aspirations.
“The scenario is exactly like that in the Kevin Spacey film Pay it Forward,” she said.
“Barrie is in a position to do me a big favour while in return, it will be my pleasure to be able to support Katarina”
Wells, who has backed Johnson-Thompson since her 16th birthday, has seen the young athlete go on to become the world number one in 2014 and hopes Sayers’ involvement will help improve her weaker throwing disciplines.
