New Astley Amateur Boxing Club’s TJ Turner is aiming to become a national champion when he steps in the ring in Rotherham this weekend.

Turner takes on Middlesbrough’s Balal Hussain in the 46-48kg final of the England Boxing Junior Development Championship on Saturday, with the prize of a national title up for grabs to the winner.

The class B clash is one of more than 30 bouts taking place at the Magna Science Adventure Centre, with the weigh-ins at 11am followed by the first fight at 1.30pm.

Hussain beat Towerhill’s Brandon Dunne by a split decision in the semi-finals in Warrington last month to advance to the final against Turner, who will be hoping to punch his way to glory when the two youngsters collide on Saturday afternoon.

Elsewhere, New Astley’s Lee Morfey will also be in action this weekend when he competes in the England Boxing Senior Development Championship.

Morfey reached the quarter-finals of the competition 12 months ago, losing to Woking hitter Michael Chapman by a majority decision.

The middleweight had seen off Norwich’s Dan Gibson and St Osyth’s Mitchell Fearson in the Eastern Counties rounds last year and will be looking to go all the way this time round.

Fellow New Astley boxer Demie-Jade Resztan will be representing England in a tournament in Bulgaria, and is hoping the work with strength and conditioning coach Ian Howell will pay off.
