Kevin Jolly is pleased with the draw the Mildenhall Fen Tigers have been handed in the opening round of the National League Knockout Cup.
Following the draw, which took place earlier this month, the reigning Knockout Cup champions will face National League newcomers Coventry Storm over two legs in their start to make it three successive titles.
After defeating the Stoke Potters 103-83 in the 2011 final, the West Row-based outfit made it back-to-back triumphs in the showpiece of the competition last year with a 93-74 victory over the Dudley Heathens.
“There is a real buzz among teams in the National League this year and I think the draw against Coventry in the cup is a good one for us,” said co-promoter Jolly. “I am happy with the team we have put together and I am confident that the lads can get past Coventry.”
As a result of the draw it will also see former Fen Tigers heat leader Joe Jacobs pitted against his old club, although Jolly is unsure whether the Ipswich-based rider would be appearing for the West Row leg of the clash.
“I don’t know whether Joe Jacobs will be available for the fixture at West Row as it all depends on his riding arrangements for Glasgow so it may be that Coventry bring in a guest for him,” he said. “But if Joe does return it would definitely be an added attraction.”
Following a meeting between Jolly and his fellow co-promoters Michael Lee and Chris Louis, and stadium owner Dave Coventry at the weekend, a provisional date has been set for the Fen Tigers’ first home meeting of the 2013 season.
“The meeting at the weekend was very positive and subject to it being confirmed by the BSPA we are looking at April 7 being our first home meeting of the season,” said Jolly. “I imagine that if we do get the go ahead on that date the likelihood is that the fixture will either be a National Trophy meeting or our leg of the National Shield against the Dudley Heathens.”
While action on the track is still over two months away Jolly has confirmed that a fans’ forum is likely to take place at the stadium within the next few weeks.
“We want to get a fans forum get together at the stadium and at the moment we are looking at doing one at the end of February as we want to get things rolling now,” said Jolly.
