Newmarket Angling Club member Gavin Goldthorpe lived up to his surname with a golden performance on Sunday.
Goldthorpe fished luncheon meat over a bed of hemp at 16 metres to win the Littleport Ex-servicemen’s Club match at Westside Lakes, Duxford.
He bagged 120lb 12oz, beating Stuart Bell into second spot. Bell ended with 42lb 11oz fishing corn at 15 metres.
Gary Rimmer came in third with 42lb 7oz fishing the margins with sweetcorn.
Margin fishing had been the killer tactic the previous day for club members at Pidley’s prolific Magpie Lake.
G Anslip tipped the scales with 66lb 7oz fishing paste in the margins and took first place, with J Caldor in second place. Caldor bagged 59lb 8oz on the pellet waggler.
n J Wing was top rod when Isleham Angling Club held its second President Cup match on Sunday.
The match, at Isleham’s Meadow, saw Wing catch roach and skimmers on maggot over crumb to finish with 10lb 14oz. F Challice finished second with 7lb 13oz of roach and perch.
n Jeff Wilkinson had a great day at Blackdyke Trout Fishery on Saturday fishing size 14-16 olive nymphs sparsely dressed under an indicator 3ft down on a floating line. Jeff caught 12 with several browns among his bag.
The fishery report there are lots of fish around the margins with the aerators being the hot spots.
