Newmarket first team remain in the promotion hunt after scoring two unanswered goals at home to Cambridge Nomads on Saturday.

While controlling much of the first half, Newmarket found it tough to create chances and it appeared they would head into the break goalless until captain Lydia Evans kept her cool to convert a penalty flick.

Hayley Stoneman made it 2-0 five minutes from time to seal the win, which leaves Newmarket two points adrift of leaders St Neots, who they face at Longsands School on Saturday (1pm).

n Newmarket Ladies II remain second from bottom in Division 3NW after being thrashed 13-0 at Cambridge South I.

Next up on Saturday for the second team is a home fixture against Cambridge City IV (12pm).

n In the East Men’s League Division 3NE, Newmarket I ran out 3-2 winners over I-ES III.

The visitors struck first early on, but Newmarket responded positively and they were level through Matthew Holden, who fired in after playing a one-two with Ollie Wade.

Newmarket’s Josh Dawson made it 2-1 soon after, before Mark Pears extended the lead early in the second half.

I-ES pulled a goal back, but Newmarket held out ahead of their game against Lowestoft Railway I on Saturday (1.30pm_.

n Newmarket III concluded their first ever season in Division 7NE by playing out a 3-3 draw with Watton II.

Alex Andreou (2) and James Atkinson were on target for Newmarket, who finish the campaign in third and miss out on promotion by just two points.
