Bury St Edmunds players Gary Andrews, Joe Reid and Sam Bixby were in the Eastern Counties team which opened their Bill Beaumont Cup county championship division one campaign with a 29-11 defeat by Cheshire at Chester on Saturday.
Counties took an early lead with a penalty from Simon Horbeck (Shelford), but Cheshire hit back with a penalty and two converted tries before Horbeck made it 17-6 with his second penalty just before the interval.
Counties lost Aki Lea (Shelford) to a yellow card early in the second half, Cheshire taking advantage with two tries to take a 29-6 lead.
Counties piled on the pressure in the last quarter, but Cheshire kept them at bay until near the end when captain Red Newberry (Shelford) capped some fine driving play with a try.
Counties are next in action against Lancashire at Fylde on Saturday. Team manager Dave Masdin will name his squad in midweek.
Lancashire beat Yorkshire 40-27 on Saturday.
