Mildenhall Fen Tigers number one Jon Armstrong is to defy doctor’s orders and ride with a broken metatarsal on Sunday during the club’s clash with the Buxton Hitmen, writes Graham Clark.
He sustained the injury when he caught his right foot in his footplate on Sunday during the club’s 53-39 win over the Kent Kings.
Despite being told to rest for between four and six weeks, the 38-year-old is determined to brave the pain barrier and take his place at the head of the Fen Tigers team.
“I have already missed one meeting this season and that is more than enough,” said Armstrong. “At the end of the day it is a pay day for me and I don’t want to be missing out on more track time.
“I have been resting it up and putting plenty of ice on it, so hopefully I will be able to make the start in heat one and limp through the meeting.”
Although picking up his injury at the end of heat 13, the Oldham-based rider, much to the surprise of many Fen Tigers fans, made a surprise appearance in heat 15.
However, for Armstrong, an appearance in that race was always going to be the case, broken metatarsal or not.
“In heat 13 Steve Boxall was pretty ruthless in checking me,” said Armstrong.
“The move was a bit over the top and I wanted to go out in heat 15 and beat him, unfortunately that was not to happen.”
