NEWMARKET JOURNAL AUGUST 2011 JAMES BLACK AGED 7 FROM SOHAM WINNER OF 3 JUNIOR GOLF TOURNAMENTS.

TAKING on the world’s best young golfers is the task that awaits James Black following his qualification for this year’s US Kids European Championships.

Seven-year-old Black, a member of both Ely City Golf Club and Ely On Par Golf Club, will put his skills to the test at the world famous Gullane course in Scotland in June after breezing past the qualifiers.

In order to qualify for the competition, players were required to shoot a nine hole round in 46 shots, over a combined distance of 1,400 yards.

The qualifying mark proved well within reach for Black, who is sponsored by the Spire Cambridge Lea Hospital, shooting a nine-hole round score of 36 over 1,600 yards.

“I am very, very pleased with James. For him to hit such a score over a further distance than was required was a superb effort,” said dad Neil Black.

Last year, Black just missed out on failing to secure a top 10 finish in the highly competitive UK Kids Golf Championship Grand Final, at Whittlebury Park, Northamptonshire.

Despite not showing his best form the rising Cambridgeshire star still managed a more than creditable 11th.

Hopes are high within the Black camp that additional work with Ely City Golf Club coach Paul Geen, a top five finish at the East Lothian course could well be a possibility.

“Paul has been very impressed with him from day one. The aim is to get Paul a bit more involved with the technical side of James’s game this year,” added Black.

“The tournament works very much in James’ favour as he will be right at the top end of the age group as his eighth birthday comes just days after the tournament finishes. With that in his favour it should put him in with a good chance of getting a top five finish.”

Prior to taking to the fairway north of the border Black will be in action on Saturday when competing in the opening round of the British Junior Golf Tour Q Cup series at the Forest Pines Golf Club, Lincolnshire.
