Burwell Tigers are building up to one of the biggest days in the club’s history after their Under-18 side reached the final of the Cambridge & District Colts League Cup, writes Liam Apicella.
In February’s quarter-final at Somersham Town Colts, Tigers ran out 5-1 winners as Kenny Jenkins fired in all of their goals.
It was the same scoreline during the semi-final against Eynesbury Rover Blue, although on this occasion it was a much different affair.
The teams were level at 1-1 after 90 minutes, but Tigers were rampant in extra-time with goals from Benjamin Ewers, Benjamin Pearce, Nicklas Staaf, James Barrett and Max Driver sending them through.
League-leading Thaxted Rangers Youth now stand in their way of glory at the Cambridge Football Stadium on Trumpington Road on Sunday, April 30.
“We are very proud of what the boys have already achieved,” said club manager Jack Smith.
“This is the first time we have had a team at Under-18 level in our 20-year history, so it is a big deal.
“Many of the players have been with the club since Under-7 and this is their last year at senior level, so hopefully they go can out with a cup.”
Thaxted are likely to be formidable opposition in the final, given that they have won all 13 of their league matches to date, scoring 75 goals in that time and conceding 16.
Tigers lost the two league encounters between the sides heavily, with Thaxted winning 6-2 in October and 5-1 last weekend.
