Sorry show hits Jockeys’ bid to stay up

RIDGEONS LEAGUE

PREMIER DIVISION

Newmarket Town 1

Walsham-le-Willows 4

NEWMARKET Town’s status as a Ridgeons League Premier Division club has been further threatened after turning in one of their worst performances of the season.

After conceding twice in the first 45 minutes, things got even worse for the Jockeys early in the second half with goalkeeper Andrew Youngs gifting the visitors a third.

Town pulled a goal back through former Walsham player James Attwood as they attempted to stage a fightback.

But any hopes of Town salvaging a point from the game were dashed late on with Walsham adding a fourth to secure the victory.

“To be fair that was our worst performance of the season. I was really disappointed,” said manager Kevin Grainger.

“We probably started better but despite having plenty of possession we did nothing with it and had one shot all game.

“Once that third goal went in after the break it was game over. I could tell after the first ten minutes it was going to be one of them games.

“It is still possible to stay up but not with performances like that.”

Town will look to change their fortunes on Saturday when taking on fifth-placed Dereham Town at Aldiss Park.

Although new signing Tony Brown will be unavailable until early next month, Grainger hopes to welcome back both Ed Curtis and Matty Graham to the fold.

“There is no point us going over to Dereham and sitting on a 0-0 draw and hoping for a point. We need the win, a point at this stage of the season is no good to us,” added Grainger.
