Jordan Gent’s early goal proved to be little more than a consolation effort as Soham Town Rangers saw their FA Trophy hopes end with a crushing 6-1 home defeat to Spalding United on Saturday.

Despite the towering centre-half putting the Ryman League Division One North side ahead in the 16th minute it was to be a rare moment of joy for Rangers with them shipping six goals without reply to exit the competition in the preliminary round of the competition.

Ely City moved off the foot of the Thurlow Nunn League Premier Division after securing their first win of the season with a 4-2 victory at FC Clacton, while Newmarket Town and Hadleigh United played out an entertaining 3-3 draw at Cricket Field Road.

Mildenhall Town failed to transfer cup form back to the league.

After defeating Needham Market 1-0 in the Suffolk Premier Cup on Wednesday Town were sent crashing back down to earth after being battered 4-0 at Recreation Way by league leaders Norwich United.
