BURROUGH Green Cricket Club is launching an ambitious scholarship programme aimed at providing new opportunities to young cricketers.

Over the next two years, the Cambridgeshire club will be awarding six scholarships, three per year, to young players from across East Cambridgeshire to help develop their all-round cricketing skills through intensive coaching.

The programme, named in memory of former club secretary Tony Davis who died last year, has been made possible to run thanks to funding from a legacy left to the club by Davis, plus donations by players and supporters to a memorial fund. In addition to receiving personal coaching and playing opportunities, successful applicants will be exempt for two years from paying match fees and tea money.

“We already have a strong record of encouraging young people to play cricket, especially in the 12-16 age range. The Tony Davis scholarships help us to take that further,” said Mark Batting, chairman of Burrough Green Cricket Club.

“The scholarships will provide personalised coaching and also enable young players to gain experience ‘in the middle’ by playing in one of our junior league teams.

“We’re looking for applicants who can demonstrate enthusiasm for sport and willingness to learn. Burrough Green’s a great place for young players to learn their cricket — we’ve got a young squad drawn from a wide catchment, a friendly, supportive atmosphere, a good pitch, and strong community support.”

Coaching will be provided throughout the project by Burwell Cricket Club player Merrick Fuller.

An English Cricket Board Level Two coach, Fuller, who has recently opened up cricket specialist shop Mr Cricket in Burwell, was awarded the Sky Sports Young Coach of the Year Award in 2008.

“I’m delighted to be involved in Burrough Green Cricket Club’s programme and I look forward to helping young players to develop their skills,” said Fuller. “I have already coached a lot of juniors, not just at Burwell, but throughout Cambridgeshire, so I know the ropes. Coaching is one thing I am also looking to promote through Mr Cricket.”

Those interested in the project have until February 21 to apply. Further information and application forms at burroughgreencc.wordpress.com
