A FAMILY trio from the City of Ely Bowls Club has failed in its bid to retain a national title.
Top woman bowler Ellen Falkner, with her mother Sue Alexander and grandmother Dorothy Bowers, reached the final of the triples in the English Women's Bowls Championship at Leamington Spa.

The Ely triple, who were defending the title they won last year, beat a North Walsham team 19-10 in the quarter-final on Tuesday.

In the semi-final they gained revenge for Ely club-mates Hilda David, Maureen Cross and Margaret Reeder by knocking out their third-round victors from Sheerness St George.

But in yesterday's final, the family triple narrowly missed chalking up another honour when they were beaten 18-15 by a team from Banbury.

Newmarket Avenue Bowls Club four Jean Lancaster, Ann Taylor, Ann Grainger and Joyce Hazelwood, also bowed out of the championships.
