Tigers slip to another loss

MILDENHALL Fen Tigers' disastrous season hit rock bottom on Sunday when they crashed to a 35-56 home defeat at the hands of the Glasgow Tigers.
With new signing Theo Pipjer ineligible and German star Robbie Kessler absent through illness, things were always going to be difficult for the West Row side.
After sharing the spoils in heat one, the visitors took a fortunate lead in heat two when both Matt Wright and Mark Baseby suffered bike problems.
Trailing by eight points, it took an inspired ride in heat five by guest Chris Schramm to kick the home side into life.
The Ipswich man then teamed up with rejuvenated Pole Michal Rajkowski to take a 5-1 in the following heat – reviving hopes among a disconsolate home crowd.
Their maximum was supported by a fine ride in heat seven by Jan Graversen, who nipped under Anders Anderson to haul the Tigers back into the meeting.
With the home side trailing by three points at the interval, it looked like the meeting may go down to a heat decider.
But as the teams came out for the second half, Mildenhall's luckless fortunes continued when Michal Rajkowski's chain broke in heat 10, leaving the way clear for Trent Leverington and Anders Anderson to take the first of four successive maximums for the visitors to effectively seal the meeting.
Team boss Laurence Rogers looked to salvage some pride by sending guest rider Chris Schramm out in a double scoring black and white helmet but the move back-fired as Schramm could not get past a determined Carl Stonehewer, who kept him at bay from start to finish.
Staring at another defeat, Rogers sent out Graversen as a tactical substitute in the penultimate heat. Starting 15 meters back in the double scoring helmet, the Dane provided some cheer when he managed to squeeze past Mitchell Davey and Andy Bargh to take four points.
A 5-1 in the finale to the visitors summed up another disappointing afternoon for the West Row outfit, who still remain six points adrift at the bottom.
Fen Tigers promoter Simon Barton said: "We were simply not good enough. I thought upto the interval we were going to win but then we just hit the self-destruct button.
"We did not have a lot of luck either with four or five chains snapping. I don't think I have seen that many go in one meeting before."
Team boss Laurence Rogers added: "We were just not at the races today and Glasgow found their gating ability.
"It's hard to know what to do from here. There are other riders out there but it is who can ride on a Sunday afternoon and whether we can afford them."
