MILDENHALL Fen Tigers set a new speedway record when a 34-56 defeat at the hands of Stoke Potters saw them finish the season without a single win.
The West Row outfit are the only team in the history of British speedway to go through a whole campaign without recording at least one victory.

With BSPA chiefs blocking Elite League star Travis McGowan's move to the club for Sunday's final match, it left the Suffolk side with an uphill task as they battled to gain their first points of the season.

A bright start was made by the basement club as guest rider Kozza Smith powered away from gate four to lead from start to finish.

The second heat then saw the West Row pair of Luke Priest and James Cockle left at the gates by Stoke's young Danish duo of Krister Jacobsen and Klaus Jakobsen to give the visitors their first 5-1 of the afternoon.

Stoke followed up their maximum with a 4-2 in heat three before Tigers' guest Richard Sweetman helped the home side to two 3-3s to keep the scores competitive.

An outstanding piece of race-riding in heat seven by Australian Smith showed the crowd that he is a star of the future.

Left behind at the tapes, the youngster went under Potters captain Andrew Moore before swooping around Jacobsen to take the chequered flag.

All Smith's and Sweetman's efforts were undone in heats eight and nine as some lacklustre riding by the Tigers saw the visitors take a 5-1 and 4-2 to open up a 14-point lead.

A familiar sight from the Tigers disastrous campaign made its appearance as the double scoring black and white helmet was handed to King's Lynn reserve Smith.

A flying start by team mate Casper Wortmann saw him push out Stoke's Jesper Kristianson, which in turn shut out Smith.

Ben Barker took full advantage of his team mate's work to slip under the Tigers pair to lead home the Loomer Road side's third heat maximum of the afternoon.

Mildenhall's fate was sealed just two heats later as Stoke passed the magic 46-point barrier with another 5-1 courtesy of Barker and Jacobsen.

Fen Tigers fans were treated to something special in heat 13 when the Australian duo of Smith and Sweetman teamed up for the hosts' one and only maximum of the day.

That was to be the last race win disappointed Tigers fans were to see as Jakobsen rode to victory in heat 14 before Barker and the Dane teamed up for a 5-1 in the finale to gift the West Row side the most unwanted record in British speedway.

Fen Tigers promoter Jonathan Chapman said: "We tried to get a team together to try to win but, unfortunately, it was out of our hands. I wish the BSPA had seen our injury list."

"I felt we held our heads up high. Kozza Smith and Richard Sweetman did a fantastic job for us to try and make it a good meeting."

Scores – Fen Tigers: K Smith 12, C Wortmann 0, D Halsey 0, R Sweetman 12, J Cockle 2, L Priest 8.
Stoke: L Complin 5, M Burrows 7, B Barker 15, J Kristianson 4, A Moo
