Shunt ends Jarvis' race hopes

BURWELL racing driver Oliver Jarvis endured a difficult weekend on his debut at the Norisring Germany after finishing a disappointing 12th.
The Cambridgeshire driver, who is competing in his first full season of the DTM German Touring Car series, currently lies in 9th place in the drivers' championship after five rounds.

Qualifying in 13th spot and with his team having to carry a success penalty, Sunday's race around the 1.43-mile German street circuit was always going to be difficult.

After a positive start, the 24-year old found himself in 10th place by lap 10 and chasing a points finish.

But any hopes Jarvis had of moving through the field were effectively ended when he was shunted from behind by JungSterne AMG Mercedes driver Maro Engel as he raced into turn four.

Despite having to battle against steering problems and faltering brakes, Jarvis eventually crossed the line 47 seconds behind race winner and fellow UK driver Jamie Green.

Green took the chequered flag after an epic four-way battle with Bruno Spegler, Timo Scheider and current DTM champion Mattias Ekstrom, which saw just 2.5 seconds split them at the line.

Schieder's third place at the Norisring circuit ensured the Audi driver stayed at the top of the drivers' table, while giving Audi its first podium finish at the track since 2005.

After the race, Jarvis said: "I made a good start and after my first compulsory pit stop we looked to be in a strong position.

"When Maro Engel tried to come up on the inside of me into turn four the move wasn't on and he hit the back of me.

"From then on, it was a real fight to the end. It was a disappointing way to finish."
