Olympic distance no problem for teenager

NEWMARKET triathlete Gabe Lowrie was in winning form when he competed in his first Olympic distance triathlon at Northampton's Grendon Lakes on Sunday.
Lowrie, 18, a member of the Cambridge and Leeds Met Triathlon Clubs won the event’s under 20 category and finished 11th overall completing the 1500 metre lake swim, 40k bike and 10k run in 2:03:24.

“It was tough but I was very pleased with my performance overall,” said Lowrie, who will be racing at Culford later this month and hopes to line up in the British Junior Championships to be run over the 2012 Olympic course in London’s Hyde Park in August.

He recently received a £250 sports excellence award from Forest Heath Council and also hopes to compete in the London Triathlon early next month.

l Ely’s 2009 triathlon and aquathlon will be held on Sunday September 9 at the King’s School.
