THE New Astley Boxing club rewarded its top boxers at its annual awards night.
Although the Newmarket-based club failed to pick up any titles over the last year, it did see several boxers go close and reach the quarter-finals and semi-finals of various competitions.

Heading the list was 15-year-old boxer of the year Alfie Smith, who reached the semi-finals of the National Association of Young People's Club Championships.

Head coach Mark O Reilly said: "Although we didn't win any titles this year, we are moving in the right direction as a club.

"We have got a lot of young lads who will be carded in the next 12 to 16 months with three or four exceptional talents mixed within them."

"I am also confident that Matt Jack will go well at the firefighter games in August."

The winners were: Riley Vinden (best school boy), Steven Smith (best junior new corner), Jamie Corner (best youth), Peter Croucher (best senior new corner), Aaron Schupp (best senior), Matt Jack (most dedicated trainer), Gary Frostick (most improved boxer), Alfie Smith (boxer of the year) and Paddy Smith and Martin Watts (John Humphrey Memorial Trophy).
