MILDENHALL'S first team entertained Sudbury at Wamil Way on Saturday still smarting from their first defeat of the season in the Two Counties Division One.
Mildenhall made one change from last week, with Adam Trett, back from the USA and having his first knock of the season last week, getting the nod over Luke Turner.

Sudbury batted first and A Younger came after the Mildenhall bowlers from the start. He had blasted 30 out of the first 37 runs when he attempted an extravagant straight drive off Phangabantu and was clean bowled.

This brought John Kent, the South African all rounder, to the crease to join Phillips. However, with just four more runs added, James Holmes bowled Phillips for six.

Kent's classy batting was there for all to see but with 11 runs on the board he was deceived by the pace of Holmes and edged a catch to wicketkeeper Karl Holmes and was gone for 13.

Mildenhall were visibly lifted with this prized wicket and ripped through the Sudbury middle order. Witham, Reece and Wooderson were all dismissed for ducks, while Hurrell (6) was back in the pavilion following a great catch by Richard Cross off the bowling of James Holmes.

With Sudbury struggling on 72-7, the home side had a set back when James Holmes (4-29) broke down with a knee injury and Richard Cross damaged his back fielding.

P Siegert (30) and A Simmons (12) offered some resistance for the visitors, who were finally dismissed for 116. Each of the five Mildenhall bowlers had picked up wickets and Karl Holmes had claimed four catches behind the stumps.

In response, Mildenhall sent in Holmes as a makeshift opener in place of Cross and he was accompanied by Ziaf Kulasi.

Kent and Simmons led the attack for Sudbury, unleashing a barrage of short-pitched deliveries that Kulsai countered with an array of hitting that culminated in the South African being hit for four and six in successive balls.

Holmes (17) dug in to get Mildenhall to 49 before Kent had him caught and then removed Jimmy Watson for a duck.

Frannie Bester had made nine when he tried to fend a short ball off Kent and was caught behind. The next over saw Kulasi (38) trapped lbw by Simmons to leave Mildenhall teetering at 65-4.

Adam Trett, with just one innings behind him this season, came in and, together with Chris Baugh, steadied the innings to push the score past 100.

Baugh's resistance came to an end when he was caught and bowled by Woodson and it was left to Trett (36no) and Squire (6no) to get the last 10 runs that secured victory. John Kent was the pick of the bowlers as he finished with figures of 3-66.

The win keeps Mildenhall at the top of the table and their six victories this season is as many as they achieved in the whole of last year's campaign.

East Bergholt v Mildenhall II

MILDENHALL'S second team travelled to East Bergholt in the Two Counties League Division Three and suffered their third defeat on the trot.

On a positive note, Luke Turner having been left out of the first team this week, helped himself to a fine century.

Mildenhall III v Maldon II

MILDENHALL'S third team had a home fixture against Maldon 2nd X1 in a Division Six match of the Two Counties League.

Mildenhall batted first and made 155 all out with highlights coming from a 66-run partnership between Tony Cornell (35) and captain Mick Saunders (48) after Hein Muller had blasted a quick 29. D Richardson claimed 5-32 for the visitors.

Taking to the field, Mick Saunders tried valiantly to switch his young Mildenhall bowling attack about but they were no match against the experienced batting of Hawkes (46), Collins (46) and Ellis (43no) as Maldon cruised past the Mildenhall total at the rate of five runs per over to secure a six-wicket win.

Mildenhall I Sunday XI v Sudbury

MILDENHALL'S Ist XI Sunday side made the return trip to Sudbury to play in the Hunts County Bats League and racked up 244 in their 40 overs thanks to a magnificent 80 from Alex Lee.

Captain Ziaf Kulasi (53), relishing another tilt at Sudbury, competed a half-century, while there was able support from Ben Shepperson and Frannie Bester, who both scored 40s.

In reply, Sudbury were bowled out for 160, with Hein Muller stepping up to the plate to claim four wickets, including the top prize of South African John Kent (54).

Brandon v Mildenhall II

MILDENHALL'S 2nd XI enjoyed an emphatic win away at Brandon in Division Five of the Hunts County Bats League.

Batting first, skipper Andy Carter made 47 and veteran Peter Webb scored 33.

The highlight, however, was young Jack Gould's 86, which included 15 boundaries.

Mildenhall amassed 270-6 with the help of 61 extras due in some part to the late withdrawal of the regular Brandon wicketkeeper.

The visitors were pleased to welcome back bowler Andy Youngs after a six-week layoff with a broken wrist and he impressed early on taking 1-12 off his first six overs.

It was the masterly spin bowling of Pete Webb (3-17) and Mark Thurston (3-8) that proved the undoing of Brandon as they were dismissed for 110.

For the hosts, M Roberts top-scored with 42 with P Roberts making 24.
