OLYMPIC javelin thrower Goldie Sayers has been sent a message of support from East Cambridgeshire District councillors.
Sayers, who was born in Newmarket but lives in Ely, is the current British record holder for the javelin and has the chance of a medal in Beijing where the Olympic Games begin tomorrow.

Council chairman Peter Cresswell said: "It is not often you have a world-class athlete on your doorstep who is to represent her country at the Olympics.

"Goldie is a great sportswoman and I thought it was only appropriate that we wish her good luck as she takes to the field.

"It is a dream of many people to compete at the Olympics but one which only a very few can ever realise.

"It has taken a lot of hard work and dedication to get Goldie to where she is today and we are all hoping that she throws the javelin further than she ever has before and can come back with a medal.

"All the best Goldie, we are keeping our fingers crossed and we will be cheering you on."
